How Much Should Your Wedding DJ Cost?

Why?

Because this isn't easy to say, I don't say it lightly: When it comes to Wedding DJ's, Brides and Grooms can and should expect more professionalism than the status quo that has been perpetuated as "acceptable" for far too long.

And that's not just my opinion. Over the years I've talked to brides, grooms, friends, other wedding professionals and even wedding DJ's and everyone seems to agree that the bar for Wedding DJ professionalism has been set (but even more oddly, accepted) at an often shockingly low level of expectation. In many cases the quality of the service provided falls well beneath the level of mediocrity. IMO that's not ok because the reputation of the entire DJ industry is damaged every time a DJ falls short. It's created an atmosphere of apathy where people in need of a DJ often hope to pay very little for one simply because they expect so little in return.

This post isn't about bashing what I consider to be average or stereotypical Wedding DJ's. For the most part I don't think there's anything particularly deceptive about how most of them run or market their companies. It's not a bait and switch scenario. Clients hire them with their eyes wide open, understanding the level of service they will receive. Some are willing to contract an average DJ because they think what they're seeing is "as good as it gets."

In some cases their expectations are so low they don't even try to find a qualified DJ or MC because they don't realize good DJ's exist. Recently I stumbled upon this blog post on Vegan Bride titled "Phil Birdsell Saved the Day!" written by her real life groom. It's a perfect example of what this article is all about. He and his bride weren't going to hire a Professional DJ... Until they met Phil Birdsell who completely transformed their perception of what a wedding DJ can be and exceeded all of their expectations.

I know a common misconception is that all DJ's are "cheesy" or as MC's they are "obnoxious" on the microphone. So the logic is: Why pay a lot for someone who is most likely going to annoy or disappoint you? For some companies those may be accurate descriptions of the types of services they provide. But I want to share with you today that not all DJ companies are like that...

Some are good.

Some are really good.

A select few are truly great.

CONSIDERATIONS
IMO the major factors that really matter when it comes to price are:

Budget
If a particular DJ doesn't fit your budget, keep looking for the most qualified one who does. You want to choose the right DJ to entrust your reception to: One who is going to try their hardest and do their best for you, not the first one you talk to or the most convenient one.

What is a DJ Worth?
The answer to this question varies based on your needs, expectations and priorities and the level of talent, skills and customer service a DJ is able to provide to you.

The funny thing (as in ironic not ha ha) is that I have worked in the wedding industry for 13 years and by far know more vendors who do not charge enough for their services than those who overcharge. So many people who work in the wedding industry do so because they love to make people happy, they're really not in it for the money. Some barely charge enough to break even on the cost of their labor, supplies and equipment. (When I was a custom bridal accessory designer I spent a lot of energy talking brides out of things they didn't need because imo when it comes to wedding accessories, less is more. Less will always look classic and elegant while too much can look costumed or silly.)

Are DJ's Who Charge More Worth More?
They can be but it may take research on your part to verify if a company is charging what they're worth or if they are simply being opportunistic. The sad truth is that any company can "look" legitimate. All they have to do is build a nice looking website, print up some business cards and brochures and start advertising. They may even have some impressive credentials. But those things alone aren't a guarantee of anyone's current level of professionalism or your satisfaction as their client.

On the flip side of buyer beware is knowing that paying a premium price for something doesn't always mean it's overpriced. Whether or not something costs "too much" can be determined by the answer to this question: Is it worth what it costs? You can spend $5,000 dollars on something that's worth $10,000 and get a great deal. Or you can spend the same $5000 on something that's only worth $50 and be completely taken advantage of.

My pov is: "Value is not relative to price but to the quality of the product or service you receive in return for your investment."

DJ as MC
And what about their Master of Ceremonies skills? Especially if you haven't ever seen them perform before I urge you not to just send out an email or chat on the phone before hiring a DJ because they will almost always be acting as your MC. You need to meet them in person. During your face to face consultation you can see their personality and even ask them to stand and do an introduction for you. When they do, watch for the following elements to see if they have mastered the MC skills needed to do a great job at your wedding:

Facial expression and demeanor: Do they smile and look happy to be there?
Body language: Do they slouch, rock or shift about nervously once they begin speaking? Or do they stand straight and tall with confidence?
What are their speaking skills like? Do they talk so fast you can barely understand them? Or are they so timid you can't imagine them getting everyone out on the dance floor?
Do they sound engaged, interested and excited to be there or is their voice flat as if they are reading a nutrition label on a box of breakfast cereal?
What does their voice sound like? Do they speak with sincerity in their own voice or turn on a different affected performance voice once they're speaking into a microphone? (Or spoon or ballpoint pen, whatever is handy during your consultation.)

After taking Mark Ferrell's MC workshop it is now much more apparent to me how undervalued and overlooked MC skills have been in both the past and present. It's all the more shocking because everything the MC does is an integral part of your wedding reception and should be considered when you are choosing your Wedding DJ.

WHO DO YOU HIRE?
The first and most important question would be: Were you referred to a particular DJ by someone you know and trust, who hired them for an event and were thrilled by their service? Or were you impressed when you saw them successfully performing at another event? If your answer to either question is yes, that may be all you need to know when it comes to selecting who to hire.

If you're starting from scratch, here are some tips that may help you decide if a company is going to delight or disappoint you. If you can answer "yes" to all or most of the questions below you're definitely on the right track to finding a DJ of quality.

Does the DJ you are considering hiring:

Have a Business License?
Use a Written Contract? Do they guarantee the date, their arrival and departure time and the rate they are charging you?
Have Quality Equipment?
Are They Insured?
Own a Vehicle Large Enough to Transport all of the Needed Equipment? Or will they forego the correct equipment because they don't have the space to transport it?
Come Prepared with Back Up Equipment?
Dress Appropriately?
Not Use Inappropriate Language?
Not Drink Alcohol on the Job?
Bring an Assistant When Necessary? i.e. not enough time allowed for set up before guests arrive or lots of stairs that their equipment must be carried up and down.
Are they a member of an organization that has real standards for business practices and ethics? A group where not just anyone can pay to be a member.

But here are the intangibles:
These are the things that you can't always discern from a website. These are the things a trusted testimonial from someone you know or an eyewitness account can confirm. Does the DJ you are considering hiring:

Rely on Expertise not Ego?
Deserve your trust?
Have Solid MC Skills?
Know how to Use Their Equipment Properly?
Understand the Pacing and Timing of the Reception?
Have a personality that reflects your own and/or the type of event you would like to host for your guests?
Care About Your Wedding? Are they honored to be a part of your special day or is it just a job to earn money?

There is a Big Difference Between how "Professional" and "Stereotypical" DJ's View Weddings
To me there are no exceptions, every DJ is one or the other. It comes down to integrity and the choice they make when it comes to how do they approach your wedding day? You will find both types of DJ's within owner operated and multi-op companies. Professionalism is defined as competence and skill. The Professional understands and cares that your wedding is special and will use their competence and skills to help make it enjoyable and memorable. For the Stereotypical DJ's, the common perception is that they treat weddings as just another "gig" on their calendar.

Do you remember in the movie "My Best Friend's Wedding" when Julia Robert's self centered, no frills character makes the analogy that she is "Jell-O" and in the same breath labeled Cameron Diaz's sincere character as being "Creme Brulee?"

Professional DJ's are the Creme Brulee
They are honest, have integrity and treat being a DJ as an occupation, not a hobby. Professionals know that their business requires commitment, effort and integrity to be successful. They treat their clients with appreciation and respect because they care about the fact that weddings are special events.

I've noticed over the years that because they get to know their clients so well, many owner operated "Professional" vendors in all categories, often create friendships with their clients that may last for years or decades. That's a great thing!

A Professional DJ will incur many overhead expenses to maintain their company and the high level of service they provide to their clients. These costs have to be factored into the price they charge for their services to create a profit margin. The expenses may include but are not limited to:

An annual business license
Registering their business name (DBA) with the city
Business Insurance
Association Fees
Computer and needed software
Collateral/Printshop: Brochures, business cards, letterhead, etc.
Website which includes: Design, development, monthly hosting fees, annual renewal for their domain name, periodic updates to their webmaster, etc.
Continuing Education: Attending educational industry events, workshops, seminars and conferences
Graphic Designer: Logo design & collateral development
Equipment: Initial purchase, maintenance and repair
Company Vehicle: A DJ has to own a vehicle large enough to transport their equipment to and from your event. Some own a dedicated vehicle and others purchase a larger personal vehicle than they actually need on a day to day basis simply to be able to transport their equipment on the weekends.
Gas and mileage: Some events and consultations may entail a 4+ hour round trip to reach the wedding venue
Vehicle maintenance and repair
Paying assistants when required to do their job properly
Advertising: Bridal shows, magazines, etc.
Hiring a book keeper or accountant

Stereotypical DJ's are like Jell-O
Sometimes Jell-O does hit the spot, it can have its moment. But as Julia said in the movie: "Jell-O can NEVER be creme brulee!" The Stereotypical DJ's have made being average an accepted standard. Many often treat being a DJ like a hobby. Their most common offenses, many of which you may have witnessed in person or have seen portrayed in movies or on tv that have helped to perpetuate the stereotype are: Being late, incorrectly pronouncing the bride or groom's name during the introductions, not knowing how to properly use their own equipment, not following the timeline for announcements, dressing or acting inappropriately; hitting on guests, drinking on the job, using inappropriate language or using inappropriate humor.

I know. I get and empathize that these are the reasons that some of you are considering making your own mixed music cd or playlist and may forego hiring a DJ. You just don't want to risk "that guy" showing up and ruining your wedding reception. But it doesn't have to be that way.

If you didn't before I hope you now realize that there are highly skilled, experienced, talented, caring Professional DJ's out there. They do exist!

So, How Much Should your Wedding DJ Cost?
Because different areas of the country have different price ranges, and different couples have different needs and budgets, it isn't possible for me to give you a definitive amount.

The best guidance I can offer is directly related to the following factors:

Do you want your guests to be able to hear the ceremony and vows by using an additional sound system not provided by your venue?
How important is the success of your reception to you and your fiance? Do you want classy intros, someone who entertains (as opposed to interrupts) your guests, unobtrusive sound systems that won't look tacky in photos and great music & dancing for your reception? How things sound and how successful the dancing goes is especially important if you've hired a wedding videographer.
If you haven't hired a professional wedding coordinator, do you need the DJ to help you create and execute your wedding day timeline to make sure all of the introductions and announcements are made at the appropriate times? Are you going to count on them to ensure that the photographer and videographer are in place for elements like the toasts, cake cutting and first dance?
Do you want a DJ you can trust? That knowing they are there will give you peace of mind that everything is going to go smoothly and that their presence will positively impact the success of your wedding and reception?
Have you ever hired the wrong person to do an important job? You didn't realize until things went wrong how important it was to you. Or maybe you were just too busy to be overly concerned and thought you could get by. Whatever the reason, regret basically sucks when you know you could have had a better outcome if you had done things differently.

If the answer to any or all of these questions is yes, you will want to hire the best, most Professional DJ you can afford. What do good DJ's charge? I will say while there is always the possibility you can find a better than average DJ at any price point, if you want a really good or great one they will probably charge at least twice as much as the average estimates you'll receive.

I hope this post has explained why and that I've made the process of locating, recognizing and qualifying a good DJ easier for you.

Here's a TRUE-but Funny story.

I had a wedding years ago where the groom instructed to me that he didn't care what I played as long as it wasn't the YMCA. I don't know his reason(s) why but...
At his reception...I must of had 20 or 30 requests for the YMCA. It was becoming so annoying that right before the cake cutting...I went over to the groom and said "John...what's up with all your guests requesting that I play the YMCA" at that moment...he threw up his arms and said OK...go ahead. I replied John...if you're up to it...I'll make this really fun. He goes fine.
As were getting ready to proceed with the cake cutting...I mentioned to the crowd that when we planned out the music John and Susan asked that I don't play the YMCA. At that very moment....EVERYONE erupts in disbelief and angst and looks to me like I'm the bad guy.
I then said HOLD ON....John has just told me that if you guys can come up with a couple hundred dollars for their honeymoon, he'll let me play it. Not only that...but if you can sweeten a little more...he'll throw on the Indian head gear and lead all of you into it.

Guess what? It took his party to a whole new level plus made him a few hundred dollars.

Next time you don't want one of these dances...think outside the box. you could make a few bucks for your honeymoon.

The number one fear in America is....... Public speaking! The toast is an opportunity for those who are closest to you to share words of wisdom and best wishes to the both of you. Unfortunately, most toasts are winged at the reception and many times come across as unprepared or inappropriate. Have your Best Man or Maid of Honor write the toast and rehearse. Brandt & Jamie Robin - The Proposal and Reception Hi-lites

It was the day before Thanksgiving, and Brandt and Jamie were on their way to Jamie’s parent's house for dinner.

Brandt had decided to taker a detour and pretended like he had to stop by his parents condos to turn the lights off.

After patiently waiting for Brandt to come back to the car, Jamie decided to go inside to see what was taking Brandt so long.
When she went in, she was surprised to see her future husband standing in front of a candle-light table with champagne and chocolate. He then dropped down on one knee and asked her these four words….will you Marry me.

She said Yes!

There reception was full of surprises. Jamie’s parents had just celebrated their 27th wedding anniversary and since they never officially had a reception, they did have a first dance just 27 years later; Better Late than never.

Brandt and his mom are from Baton Rouge and they are huge LSU tiger fans. It was important that I play some LSU fight songs. Since this reception was in Knoxville, Jamie the bride is of course a Vol fan. So obviously we had to play rocky top which had one side of the room cheering against the other. Too much fun!

During the dancing…a close friend of Jamies came up and told me how she used to sing Mmmbop when she was younger. In the video you will see Jamie belting out Hanson’s Mmmbop.
Brandt and Jamie did something totally out of the norm when they chose to wear boxing gloves and do a little routine during their introductions.

Free Wedding Tips #01 - Where to place your Bar-DJ - How big should my dancefloor be?

Here are some great wedding tips to help with the keeping your guests in the ballroom.

• A too small of dance floor is better than one that is too big. This creates the illusion that the dance floor was full. People are more willing to dance when the floor looks dense.
• Bar Placement: Placing your bar outside the ballroom will be a gathering spot for your guests. Bars are like Kitchens, they draw people to them. This will cause your dancing guests to leave the floor.
• Did you know…we help you with the reception event coordination? The job of pacing your reception is best handled by the person with the most entertaining experience. (ME)  From the Intros all the way to the last dance, we will coordinate all the details so your reception will flow smoothly.

Wedding Ballroom Layout. Don't Place Your DJ or Band in a Corner of the Room Like this

Ask any DJ in America where he/she doesn’t want to be setup and the vast majority will say “Over In The corner”.
Most Disc Jockey's will direct, guide and keep a flow throughout the night. Your DJ or MC will work the room and act as a liaison between you and all your vendors.

In order to do this, your DJ needs to be close to the center of the action. Where is the center of action? Besides the bar, it’s the dance floor. This is where EVERYTHING takes place. While the bride and groom are thee focal point, having us tucked away like a side show is not a good idea.

Notice in the above picture how the DJ is tucked in the corner and guess who is right in front of the speakers?
In this photo, the ideal situation would have been to move the table in front of us and have us move where the table is.

Fun Wedding Reception full of suprises at Palmetto Club for Jonathan and Tracy

Congratulations to Jonathan and Tracy Popple. The beautiful couple who met while working together at Panera were married at the Palmetto club in Lithia, FL The ceremony took place outside in the courtyard. The B&G asked if I would pick their music so I chose Jonathon Cain's (Journey) Bridal Chorus for the march. They didn't have a co-ordinator so thank goodness I was there to help with the lineup and intstruct them when to walk down the isle.

The Reception started off with an hour of cocktails. When the doors opened up to the ballroom, I had my DJ assistant Bruce mix a set of up tempo music (starting off with Michael Jacksons - Wanna Be Startin' Something) to set the tone for the intros. BTW...having a DJ to beat mix while you have a seperate MC makes for much better event. Otherwise...you would have to have pre canned background music playing while the MC lines up the wedding party.
While the uptempo music is being played, I lined up the wedding party and gave them instructions on what to do. As I walked backed into the ballroom, I had all the guests line up along both sides of the dancefloor. (This is way better than having the guest sit at their tables)

Next we introduced the wedding party.

Shannon, Marry and Mike entered to Beautiful by Akon

MOH Kerri and Best Man Jimmy danced into the room to Down by Jay Sean

The energy was at full capacity as Bruce looped Black Eye Peas - I Gotta Feeling while I got the crowd pumpin their fists and cheering with anticipation while the Bride and Groom waited just outside the door. Right before the hook of the song...I introduced Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan and Tracy Poppple. The place went nuts!

Jonathan was the man with a plan. He planned every detail of this reception.
He chose..

American Idol runner up Danny Gokey's version of "You Are so Beautiful" for first Dance
Jay Sean Down "Candle Light Version" as Last Dance

The reception was full of surprises.

The Groomsman did an incredible acapella to "I can't remember" Tracy. These guys are professional entertainers. I wanted to video tape but my batteries to my Flip were dead. :(

A request for The horah. Just look at the picture of Jonathan holding his drink in his mouth while holding on for dear life. Classic!!

Hats off to Excellence in Home care. They jammed out tonight at Maggiono's at Westshore Mall.

Family Feud at Christmas Party - Tons of fun!! - Great at Weddings too!!

Southern Dunes Golf club in Haines City, FL is one of my repeat customers for their annual Christmas Party. This year they wanted Family Feud to add to there Mardi gras theme so I brought out my gameshow podium that has two lighted lockout buttons, score board and microphones. After an hour of QAB (Quality Adult Beverages) they were primed to challenge each other in a couple rounds of trivia.
This game works just like the TV series with questions and answers from the actual show. Some sample questions are:

Name something That Pops
Name a Car that Has An Animal Name

etc..etc....I even added some Jaywalking questions from the jay Leno show.

Now for you bride and grooms...this is a perfect icebreaker at weddings or rehearshals. You could actually do this right after dinner and pit the families or wedding party against each other.

Congratulations to Todd and Julie!!!!

Todd and Julie who are both from knoxville, Tennessee...took the untraditional approach to getting married all the way through the honeymoon. Here's how it all unfolded....On November 7th, 2209 they got married on the beach at The Don Cesar located on St. Petersburg Beach. Only their immediate family flew down to witness the beach ceremony. Todd and Julie then went on their honeymoon to Atlantis in the Bahamas. How cool is that?
While the lovely couple was honeymooning in Atlantis, their parents were getting ready to throw a reception in Tennessee. This is where I come in to play.
The reception took place at The Jubilee Center in Knoxville on the 14th. Approximatley 125 of their friends and family members showed up to express their love for Todd and Julie. The challenging part for Todd and Julie was just getting there. They flew from the Bahamas to Tampa on Friday the 13th, then left Tampa for Knoxville via a stop in Chicago on the 14th. Yes the 14th, the day of their event.

Needless to say...they were both exhausted from all the traveling! They only wanted to dance their first dance song "I Cross My heart" for only 45 seconds. Same thing for the Father Daughter-Groom Mother Dance which was "Isn't She Lovely"

It was a real treat working with Wendy from A Blissful Occasions. She helped with the lineup and many other details of the reception.

Tip #21 Are You Having Kids at Your Wedding?

If so, if you are having a bouquet and garter toss, you might want to consider having a special Teddy Bear toss for the little ones.

Here’s what you do…

Purchase a small Teddy Bear online or if you have kids, raid their closet for a stuffed animal. When it’s time to toss the bouquet, have a separate Teddy Bear toss first for all the kids. Have your DJ invite all the kids up and toss the Teddy Bear; Now to get them to quickly exit the dance floor so you can go ahead with the adult version, tape candy before the event underneath all the tables and have the kids do a scavenger hunt.

Tip #22 Don't Hire a DJ....Until you you read this first

When you hire a photographer, you can see their work. When you look for flowers you can touch and smell them. When it comes to choosing entertainment unless you've already seen them in action, you have no way of knowing what you're getting until the day of. Are you comfortable with that?

A Brief history Lesson: In the early 1980's to become a DJ, you had to have a business license which cost $1200. To get the phone to ring, you needed a yellow page add, to have a yellow page add, you needed a business telephone...all of which cost money. Oh...I forgot to mention you need DJ gear and a music library which could easily top $10,000.

1990's: Deregulation and the Internet forever changed the way we live. The MP3 was invented. High speed Internet was being developed. DJ trade shows were springing up, DJ publications were new, DJ training and courses were becoming available. Electronic manufacturers were developing DJ gear. Becoming a better performer and learning a trade was readily available if you wanted it.

Today Everyone wants to be a DJ. It's sexy, hip and easy to get into. Unfortunately, only a handful "approximately 20% "that's 2 out of 10 DJ's" take it serious enough and run it as a business. How does that effect you? These 20% will invest in training to become better at Emceeing, improv, staging, interactives and more. They will know how to read a crowd, keep the party going, manage the event, offer unique ideas and suggestions over the same old typical standards you're used to seeing. In other words, your event will be much better.
Sadly The other 80% looks at it as an extra source of income. They are only in it for the short term. They can offer low prices because they haven't invested in training, business plan and more than likely downloaded there music for free. FYI...Illegally downloading music not only hurts the professional DJ, but it's stealing from the artists.

The fact that they can offer low prices is appealing in today's economy. Unfortunately, in most cases you're not getting what you think you are getting. I've witnessed first hand many untrained Deejays showing up without any planning only to hack the introductions, have dead air, bad appearance, inability to work the room, no personality, drinking alcohol and more. Sounds like a good deal doesn't it? Unfortunately, more and more brides are opting for the cheaper version thinking they are getting the better deal.

I love my job! When you have a room of 220 people all jamming out and having a blast because of what you're playing...then that is a feeling you just can't describe. It's why I love being a DJ!!!

Brian & Ovie were married August 8th 2009 and had their reception at Teco Plaza. The reception didn't start until 8:00PM so the guests were ready and willing to have a good time upon entering the venue. In fact, there so much energy going on I had the dancefloor jamming before the wedding party arrived.

There were plenty of guests from Pittsburgh so of course they wanted to hear the Steeler Polka. It's amazing when you have out of towners attending a wedding, add alcohol and you have a the ingredients of Amazing Fun!

A few highlights:

One guests started to dance to Michael Jackson - Don't stop Get you Get Enough so I grabbed a white glove from my prop box and he did his best MJ dance and the crowd went nuts! I wish I had a picture!!!!

A conga line started and it was the longest I ever seen. Must of been all 220 in line...again....I wished I had photos. You'll just have to imagine!!!

They were married July 11th, 2009 in Powell, TN. They had a reception for 230 family and friends at The Jubilee Center in Knoxville.

They met in 8th grade and have been best friends ever since. Now they are Husband and wife.

The wedding party had a suprise for the groom. After all the formalities were done...the girls did a dance routine to 'These boots were made for walking" all choreographed with cowboy boots.

The folks at The Jubilee Banquet Facilty are super nice people. Sharon and her family all did a terrific job. Tip #20 Money saving tips!

Let's face it. Most people hire a DJ/MC after they have spent all their money on everything from flowers to food. When the realization comes that "I need a DJ" they look at the budget and then come to a conclusion that I only have $500 to spend for music. Often times what happens is they opt for settling for an average at best talent or sometimes resort to a friend to perform on the most important day of their life. Sadly, 80% of these same brides surveyed, said if they had to do it all over, they would have placed the entertainment near or at the top of their shopping list.

Folks.... you only have one shot at hitting a home run. If you want an Entertainment Driven reception where EVERYONE DANCES, EVERONE Comments on how much fun they had 6 months after your event, if you want your photos or video to look better than if eveyone is just sitting around, then you owe it to yourself to take a look at some money saving tips so you CAN HAVE THE DJ of YOUR DREAMS.

R U Ready?

Chair Covers:
At a minimum of $4 per chair, a hundred-guest wedding just took $400 out of the budget for an item that, (imho), only makes a visual impact when the room is empty...people arrive and hang their coats over the backs of the chairs and $4 down the drain! They don't make the seats more comfortable and you cannot really see them once people are sitting in them.

Ice 'Sculptures':
First of all, very few of them are really carved anymore, the proper description would be "ice mold". $1000+ for a hunk of ice that they won't even give you a drink large enough to float it in!? Even if you don't use this savings toward the Deejay, then at least upgrade the food choices instead of this melting money waster.

Flowers:
Very few things bring so much to the look of a room or fill a dumpster so quickly! Encourage plants and living arrangements that their guests can take home to enjoy.

Cake:
Does anybody really need a life-size fondant replica of the Bride??? Cakes are meant to be eaten, get a nice one, but ensure that it's edible, appealing and plated early enough for guests to actually enjoy. Keeping the top tier in cold storage for the first anniversary is a cruel joke perpetuated by the former generations who fell for it when they were newlyweds...suggest a gift certificate from the bakery for a 'personal-sized' cake of the same recipe to be baked fresh next year.

Limousines/Carriages:
While it's a special personal moment, and you should pamper yourselves, don't get these things if you're doing it just to show the guests...UNLESS YOU MAKE SURE THE PLAN INCLUDES HAVING THE GUESTS GATHERED WHERE YOU'RE ARRIVING/DEPARTING. Many times, the guests can't see where you pull up from the room, and many B&G's don't make a Grand Exit to a waiting limo, so why have one on the payroll?

Bubbles, Disposable Cameras, Favors:
Nice ideas, but history has taught us that these are simply expensive doodads for the children to monopolize... bubbles rarely get blown at the couple when they arrive or depart as intended, but they do get spilled on the dancefloor/playground with surprising regularity. The idea of your guests capturing that Kodak moment for you is a wonderful dream that rarely sees fruition...but you do get 30 or 40 shots of the same things that the gaggle of kids all run around taking one shot each of! If you must buy favors for the guests, choose wisely considering what YOU would be inclined to take home and cherish if it was given to you.

They were married this past Saturday in Tampa and held their reception at The Italian Club in Ybor city. They are a lovely couple who saw me at a wedding a couple of years ago. Tommy (the groom) was the Best Man at that wedding.

The venue is an awesome place to have a reception. It is an old historic building with lots of character.

It's late so I don't have enough thoughts yet to add to this blog. I must say that it was an AWESOME wedding and Reception. It took place November 15th, 2008 at Tampa Palms.

Client Spotlight - Chad & Cheryl Lucente - Party At The Hard Rock

Imagine standing in a long line waiting to enter an area to a park that is surrounded by lush green landscape, beautiful lighting and music to keep your toes tapping. When you enter, the first thing you see is a gazebo that you walk through so you can sign ... get this...two electric guitars.

Chad & Cheryl Lucente were married poolside Saturday night 11-8-08 at The Hard Rock Hotel in Tampa. 185 of their closets friends and family members gathered around the poolside to witness the ceremony by a family member. This wasn't your normal or typical wedding setting.

The evening started off with a cocktail hour outside by the pool deck. At 7:00PM, all the guests "with beverages in hand" gathered around poolside for the ceremony. When the ceremony was over, cocktail hour #2 began. If you are a fan of frozen drinks, you had to see the ice sculpture that was on display. I am not exaggerating when I say this thing was 12 feet wide and 10 feet tall with a guitar as a slide to pour the drinks down. The base "all ice" was so big that the bartender was standing on something behind the sculpture so he could perform his magic.

The brides mother from Naples, hired me to be "The DJ/MC" but had a big surprise for me and everyone else when she at the last minute, informed me she had hired a band to play. The biggest surprise about the band is that the lead singer, will be on this seasons American Idol!. How cool is that? The band "High Tolerance" out of Miami is a high energy Rock N Roll band that had the brides dad singing on the mic. Everyone was having a blast!

There were allot of quality professionals working together on this event.

I don't wish for this thread to become an advertisement but, when you work with The Best I strongly feel they deserve praise.

Mary Patterson at The Hard Rock was as easy to work with as anyone I have ever worked with. One thing I see firsthand when working at The hotels is that the coordinators always seem to be walking on eggshells; not so with Mary, she was actually singing along with the band. Way to go Mary!
The photographer - A Fly on the wall photography, definitely deserves her name. Not once did she ever take away from the event by killing the energy asking the DJ or Band to ask everyone off the dance floor for a photo shoot.
CVP Videography is well known throughout the country for their high-end work. I can't wait to see the video.

For 115 years, Chiefs have been tried and tested and have been called upon to be the guiding example for the Navy. what sets “THE CHIEF” apart from other ranks of the service is that chiefs train there own. Even though the training and tactics have been changed throughout the years, the product has remained the same. This group is no different, they have had a long and tiresome past few weeks.

After months of extensive training these guys were chomping at the bit to let loose.

We brought in Jan from Drum Magic and her group engaged the crowd in drumming. It's amazing how much rhythm a person has after a few drinks. :)

Client Spotlight - Amy & Donald - May 25th, 2008

What a Night!

In my years of being a DJ, this night ranked up there as one of the most fun.

Amy Winarsky and Donald Schwartz were married May 25th at Tampa Palms. Their reception was a one of a kind affair which included personalized intros of each wedding party member and a mini love story of how Amy and Donald met and the journey that brought them together.

“I must tell you that every time I do unique personalized intros, it really plays a significant difference on the overall outcome of the reception”. People are more inclined to stay the entire reception because they see that this event isn’t like others they’ve attended.

Right after the introductions, we went into a 5 song set of Jewish music which included the Hora. Everyone attending was on the dance floor dancing and clapping there hands. Right after the set, we had everyone sit down as Amy and Donald took center stage for there first dance which was “From This Moment”

After dinner, we did an edited version of the Shoelywed game where you have both contestants take of their shoe and raise the one corresponds with the correct answer. Let’s just say that “Amy wears the pants in the family”
Donald had a great idea for the cake cutting ceremony; he asked that I play “Once in love with Amy” which EVERYONE sang along to.
To end the night, Amy thought it would be a great idea to pay tribute to our soldiers since this was Memorial Weekend. I suggested we do a Best wishes – Circle of love and I would pass out patriotic props that everyone could raise over there heads while we played “God Bless the USA” It was a great way to end the night as well as a photo opportunity.

Speaking of photos “Nice segue” The couple working next to me that night were so good that I NEVER had to inform them on what was going on. As a working professional, I must tell you that this is the way it SHOULD BE! I never worked with this photographer before but after awhile of chatting, I was amazed to learn that he is ranked 4th in the WORLD!!! This humble person is none other than Gary Kaplan! Client Spotligt - Ashley's Bat Mitzvah

Ashley celebrated her Bat Mitzvah in style at Maggiono's on May 17th, 2008. She and all her friends played fun games like:

Dice Dice Baby
Coke & Pepsi
Survivor Challenge
Freeze Dance

We added a little twist to her candle lighting ceremony; during the 7th candle, we did a 7th candle stretch and had Ashley get on a couple of adult shoulders as they paraded her around the room in a conga line.
Everyone had a blast and danced the whole afternoon. BTW... if you have NEVER been to Maggiono's, please go! There food and service is absolutely fantastic. Michelle is the contact person in banquets. It was nice to work once again with quality vendors like Beverly from Village Photography. I am glad she is still around and look forward to working with her again.
Thanks to Shelley who booked me all the way from Philadelphia without ever meeting me. You rock girl! And most importanlty, Mr. & Mrs. Hildebrandt. Thank you very much for placing your trust in my service. You have a lovely family.

Thanksgiving in Denver

This past Thanksgiving, my lovely wife suprised me with a pair of airline tickets she acquired through her frequent flyer miles. I had already secured a hotel stay through a silent auction at my sons school so all we needed to do was place Max "our yellow lab" in club med.

If you have never been to Colorado, you must visit. The city of Denver sits 5200 feet above sea level and the mountains go up to 14,000 feet.

We flew out early Thanksgiving morning and when we touched down at the airport, we saw snow. The temperature was a brisk 27 degrees. I loved it!

I have never been skiing and by the looks of things, it may be awhile before I go. Our first day out we went to Breckenridge then over to Keystone only to witness some of the largest crowds outside of a vey busy Disney World. I couldn't believe how popular these resorts or skiing is for that matter. Now I know what all the buzz is about.

We did do some neat things like; watch a hockey game, visit red Rock Ampitheatre, Hike, go bowling and enjoy an evening at Dave and Busters. BTW... if anyone is reading, Tampa Bay needs a Dave and Busters.

MGM Studios and The Osborne Lights

I have been itching to go over over and see the Osborne lights for the past 4 years so I was in for a big suprise when I arrived.

My wife Carolyn and son Clay were standing around on Main street around 5:30 when a lady approached us and asked if my son had a sibling, when we answered no, she asked us if we would be interested in flipping the switch to turn on all 5 million lights. WOW! Of course we were extremely excited.

My son and I both stood next to the switch and in a disney like story, they had a video and camera crew along with music and countdown. It was an absolute thrill for me to stand next to my handsome son and flip the switch.

DJ Pricing 101

If you ever wondered why Deejays range in price from $300 to $3000 here is why.

The industry can be broken into three segements. Volume focused services, high quality focused services and the solo part-timers. The $1000 and up are definately more quality focused. They might do on average 40 to 50 weddings per year. There goal is to become better at their skill and offer a unique style each and every week. In order to do this They will regularly attend DJ conferences and other training courses to be at the top of their game. They spend a considerable amount of time planning and adjusting their style for your wedding.

The volume focused services will be closer to $400 to $800. Each DJ MC will do around 115 events per year plus. They spend a considerable amount of time networking with other vendors and focus on name branding. They have their style and you will get their style no matter what they tell you. They do a good job at doing it their way but make sure that their way matches your way.

The solo - part-timer is someone who moonlights as a DJ. They have other jobs during the week. This is the largest segment in our industry. They run the gammet in style, quality, pricing and more. In some cases, these are the ones that you here stories of the DJ not showing up or the party was bad.

The basic question that you need to ask yourself is what do I want? Do you want personalized service, cookie cutter style or do you simply want music. Just like the caterer, photographer, ceremony site and flowers, if you want something unique then you are going to have to do your research to find whats right for you and your guests.
